David Joel Ligon, 75, of Chapel Hill, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, August 25, 2013. He was born to Dallas Huey Ligon and Achel Drusilla Wingo Ligon on November 16, 1937, in Archer City, TX.
David was a professor of Government and History at Tyler Junior College from 1967 until his retirement in 2011. A past president of the TJC Faculty Senate, David was also the first faculty sponsor of the TJC African American Student Union. He was very active in the Smith County Republican Club, serving as a past president. From his family to his students to Leadership Tyler Class 14 and his friends throughout the political spectrum of Texas, he was a faithful and wise gentleman with a tremendous wit and radiant smile.
Serving as an elder for Trinity Fellowship Church, David’s life was that of a gracious and humble messenger of God’s unfailing grace and love through Christ Jesus. Outside of Tyler, he served as an East Texas field representative for the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International.
David is survived by his darling wife of 48 years, Robertta Joan Ligon; daughters Suzanne Liles and husband Bob of Tyler; Christy McMorris and husband Wilton of Denham Springs, LA; and Kimberly Warren and husband Stephen of Golden, CO; nine grandchildren and four great-granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews; and two adoring dogs, Danny-boy and Precious.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 28, from 5 – 7 PM at Lloyd James Funeral Home at 1011 East First Street in Tyler, 903.597.6611. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, August 29, at Trinity Fellowship Church, 10344 Hwy 31 East, in Tyler, 903.566.4226. Graveside services are at Cathedral of the Pines immediately following the funeral.
The family expresses great love and gratitude for the wonderful caregivers from Bethany Home Health Care, TMF ICU, and the Home Place at Hospice of East Texas. Donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of East Texas.
