Carol Marie Underwood, age 71, died on November 7, 2012, in a Tyler hospital after a brief illness. Miss Underwood was born in Tyler on April 5, 1941, to the late JC and Mathilda Underwood. She attended Tyler public schools, finishing as a member of the first graduating class of Robert E. Lee High School in 1959. She attended Tyler Junior College and then East Texas State College at Commerce, graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree and a major in library science. She worked for over 35 years as a librarian at Austin College in Sherman, Texas, before retiring to care for her mother until the latter's death in 2007.
A member of the First Christian Church in Tyler, she found joy in her church and neighborhood friends, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, and reading. She is survived by her sisters, Harriett Underwood Shepard of Laurel, Maryland, and Alice Underwood Smith of Houston, as well as a niece, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Underwood Wright, of Eugene, Oregon.
Viewing will be on Saturday, November 10, 2012, from 3-5 p.m.
Funeral services for Miss Underwood will be held at First Christian Church on Monday, November 12, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home. Burial will be in Tyler Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the First Christian Church, 4202 South Broadway Avenue, Tyler, Texas, 75701.
