Memorial services for Billy Don Porter are scheduled for 5:30 P.M., Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Lloyd James Funeral Home. Visitation will precede the services from 4:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. at the funeral home.
Billy passed away following a lengthy illness on Sunday, April 27, 2014 in Whitehouse. He was born on July 31, 1928, in Tyler to Eddy Dwight, Sr., and Hattie Young Porter.
He graduated from Tyler High School in 1947 where he played varsity football. Following graduation, he continued playing football at Tyler Junior College and The University of Texas at Austin. He excelled as a punter.
Billy enlisted in the Marines and was stationed at Camp Pendleton. On May 6, 1955, he married Joyce Maxine Driver of Overton. For many years, he was a familiar figure serving as an official at local sports activities. He retired from the Unites States Postal Service in 1986.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl Alvin Porter, Ralph William Porter, John Dwight Porter, and Eddy Dwight Porter, Jr.; sisters, Frances Louise Alston, Bonnie Lee Porter, and LaNelle “Mickey” Gunn.
He is survived by sons, Randal Lee Porter of Overton and Perry Don Porter of Tyler; daughter, Patti Lynn Topliff of Whitehouse; brother, Roy Frank Porter of Littleton, CO.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
