He is preceded in death by his father, Wilbur Thomas Avery of Brent, AL and mother, Malladean Medders Avery of Brent, AL; sister, Ruth Avery Hughey of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; brother, Dorman Avery of Tuscaloosa, AL.
He is survived by his spouse, Betty Lou Avery of Tuscaloosa, AL; children, Gayle (Gregg) Garrett of Northport, AL; Tommy (Emily) Avery of Tuscaloosa, AL; Steven Avery of Northport, AL; stepson, Mark (Pam) Thompson of Trussville, AL; grandchildren, Jack Avery of Tuscaloosa, AL, Luke Avery of Dallas, TX, Josh Avery of Northport, AL, Abby Avery of Tuscaloosa, AL; step-grandchild, Anna-Marie Thompson of Trussville, AL.
Shelby Avery was born August 4, 1937, the third child to Wilbur and Malladean Avery. He was raised in Brent, AL, and moved to Tuscaloosa as a young adult. Shelby worked at Gulf States Paper Corporation and then spent many years at the ARC of Tuscaloosa as a job coach. He had a love for music and coordinated a singing ensemble from the ARC.
A visitation for Shelby will be held Wednesday, July 19, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, 2200 Skyland Blvd East, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35405. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at 11:00 AM, 2200 Skyland Blvd East, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35405. A committal service will occur Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at 12:30 PM at Brent City Cemetery, Brent, AL.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the ARC of Tuscaloosa or a charity of one’s choice.
