Ruth McDaniel Hughes, age 93, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2021 at Bibb Medical Center Nursing Home. Ruth was best known as Nanny to the ones who loved her most. Born to father William A. McDaniel, and mother Thomas (Tommie) A. McDaniel, she grew up in Shadydale with her sister and two brothers. Nanny was tapped for the Honor Society and graduated from Tuscaloosa High School. She went on to marry and have one daughter, Susan. She found great success with her career, eventually retiring from Alabama Power and working for the Salvation Army.
Nanny was the most amazing, strong, God fearing woman that many were lucky to have known. Never the one to sit idle, she loved to create beautiful things. Nanny had passion for sewing, crocheting, quilting, singing, gardening, and cooking. Her biggest passion was her family and she loved us fiercely. Dementia began taking Nanny from us about 8 years ago but it was never able to steal her quick wit. She would often have us giggling over her quick comebacks. Her favorite was to shock people by telling them she grew up at Bryce Hospital, leaving them wondering just how crazy our family really is. I’m still trying to figure that out myself.
Nanny was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Helen M. Davis, and brothers C.A. McDaniel and Charles W. McDaniel. She leaves behind her daughter Susan H. Rogers (Booley Burns), 3 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren who love her just as fiercely as she did us. May we all strive to be as strong as she was.
Services will be held on Sunday, August 29, 2021 3 p.m. at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Lee officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Garden of Devotion at Memory Hill Gardens.
Flowers are appreciated as she loved all of them or you are more than welcome to make a donation to DementiaSociety.org in her name.
I’ll remember for you Nanny.
