Oneda Willoughby “Nita” Harvey, age 96, of Birmingham, died July 16, 2011. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Jordan Gerwin officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Cletus and Vertner Tynes Willoughby; her husband of 50 years, David Edgar Harvey; her siblings, Percy, Garlon, and Ralph Willoughby, Ruth Trenk, Euna Belle Cowan, Neoma Marsalis, Domer Collins, Avalee Willoughby, and Delores Martin; and her son-in-law, Gerald Nix.
Survivors include her daughter, Jean Harvey Nix Fain and her husband, Al; her grandsons, David and Gerald (Scottie) Nix; her great-grandchildren, Jaron, Zachary, Alyssa, Coleman, Hartman, Anniston, and Steadman Nix; and several devoted nieces and nephews.
She was born in McComb, Miss. Nita moved with her husband and daughter to Tuscaloosa in 1953, where she lived until illness required her to move to Auburn and then to Birmingham in 2005. She was a long time member of Forest Lake United Methodist Church. Nita was a superb caregiver, always ready to help her family in times of need. She was a wonderful cook who took great joy in watching friends and family enjoy meals at her table.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Fair Haven's Nursing Home Section, to Dr. Claire Hayes and her staff, and to Amedisys Hospice for their expert and loving care.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the Fountain of Love, Fair Haven Retirement Center, 1424 Montclair Road, Birmingham, AL 35210; or the Christen Foundation, c/o Amedisys Hospice, 2204 Lakeshore Dr., Suite 160, Birmingham, AL 35209.
