Oma was born at Carbon Hill Alabama in December of 1937. She was predeceased by her father and mother Leanord and Irene Richey and her eight siblings David, Audrey, Joan, Jimmy, Bertha, Alma, Inez, and Brenda.
Oma had four children, two predeceased her, Phillip and Shelia. Two surviving children Stanley and Joyce and seven grandchildren Shawn, Mandy, Stephanie, Kimberly, Kelly, Nicolas, and Nicole. She also had numerous great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Oma loved Jesus and tried to share Him with everyone she met. She especially loved to tell everyone of the miracles that He had done for her and to encourage them that whatever need they had He would do the same for them. She was also quick to let people know that she would be praying for them.
Oma loved a good cause to rally behind. She had been known to organize groups that would make and provide lap blankets for elderly nursing home patients and food drives to give to the needy. She had a special place in her heart for the United States veterans because her son Phillip was a Vietnam Veteran. She became the President of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Tuscaloosa Alabama Chapter, and held that office for several years. While in the office she initiated the installation of a memorial to honor our veterans. This memorial can be seen at the Bama Mall entrance just off McFarland Boulevard.
Oma had many talents. She was a craftsman, artist, singer, and musician. She taught herself to play the guitar as a young child. Her father saw her talent and would allow her and her sister Joan to travel to churches and the County Fairs surrounding their home to share that talent with others. Oma, her sister Joan, and their cousin Ronald even recorded a vinyl record at the height of their popularity.
As we grapple with the loss of her physical presence, we find solace in the scripture that assures us that when we are absent from the body we will be with the Lord. She is celebrating her homecoming with her Lord, family, and children that have gone before her. We who are left will celebrate her homecoming until we see her again. Love and Miss you.
