He is preceded in death by his, parents Wilbur and Elizabeth Snider; sister, Ann Hall; brothers, Wilbur Snider Jr, Joe Pat Snider, and Richard Snider.
He is survived by his nephew Mark Snider (Stephanie) and several great nephews and great nieces.
In 1971, Dr. Snider served as University Librarian for the Julia Tutwiler Library at UWA, the position he has held since that time. Prior to this, he worked in Tuscaloosa County as librarian and English teacher at Northside High School and then as supervisor of school libraries for the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education. He held four degrees from the University of Alabama: a B.S. and an M.L.S. in library science, an M.A. in library education, and an Ed.D. in instructional leadership and library science.
Two of Dr. Snider’s most notable awards are the Humanitarian Award from the Alabama Library Association and the Service Above Self Award from Rotary International. These two very prestigious honors reflect Dr. Snider’s servant leadership and commitment to community through education. In the local Sumter County community, he will be remembered with great respect for his service and contributions to the Ruby Pickens Tartt Library and the Sumter County Fine Arts Council—both of which he served through their governing boards—and as the organizer of the Friends of the Coleman Cultural Arts Center. He was an advocate for preserving and promoting the rich heritage and culture of our community, and many generations to come will benefit from his dedication to these and countless other organizations.
Dr. Snider sat on Dean’s Council at the University of West Alabama and a seemingly infinite number of committees over his more than 50-year tenure. Dr. Snider demonstrated a candor that will long accompany the legacy he leaves behind. On more than one occasion, he summarized his service to the University by paraphrasing Solomon, saying, “Many sons have served UWA faithfully, but thou out-weighs them all.” Those who knew Dr. Snider best will likely agree while reflecting on the legacy that he leaves.
Very recently, Dr. Snider notified the University’s Provost, Dr. Tina Jones, of his intent to retire in the fall of this year. Upon hearing his intent, the administration began discussions related to honoring Dr. Snider for his long and dutiful service, including plans to bestow Librarian Emeritus status.
