John Lawrence Slaughter, Jr passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. John was 98 years young. He was a proud veteran of the U. S. Army having served in the European campaign of World War II, graduate of the University of Alabama College of Business, brother of Alpha Tau Omega brother and an avid University of AL sports fan. John was born in Richmond, Virginia September 22, 1924. He called many cities home including Birmingham, Alabama, Miami and Key Biscayne, Florida. For the last 25 years, Tuscaloosa AL was John’s home. A love of travel instilled by his parents and uncle took John to many areas of the United States and planted the desire to see as many places in the world as possible. John is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Slaughter, brother-in-law Dr. Firmon E Hardenbergh; nieces and nephews: Esther Jane Hardenbergh Sidener (Whitney), Santa Cruz, CA; Dr. Gordon Slaughter Hardenbergh (Dr. Patricia), Vail CO; Mary Ann Hardenbergh Wall ((Mark D.), Mountain Brook AL; Firmon Stinson Hardenbergh (Vickie), Tucker, GA; Cheryl Morris Mounce, Chesterfield VA; Connie Chambers (Cal) and Cindy Kelly (David) , Tuscaloosa AL; and many great nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by Mary Ann Morris Slaughter and John L. Slaughter, III; father and mother Dr. John Lawrence Slaughter, Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth Hooker Slaughter; sister Dr. Jane LaRoque Slaughter Hardenbergh.

Graveside service will be held at Alabama National Cemetery, Montevallo. Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at 1:15 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The University of Alabama or The United Way.
