TUSCALOOSA – Inge K. Herndon, age 94, passed away January 22, 2022 at Madison Manor Nursing Home. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at Memory Chapel Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Ms. Herndon will be laid to rest in Memory Hill Gardens.
Inge was preceded in death by her husband, David M. Herndon; brother, Dieter Rietzke; and daughter, Linda M. Herndon.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Anderson; sons, David A. Herndon and Ronald C. Herndon (Jeanne); sister, Charlotte Garcia; and grandchildren, Chris Herndon (Cynthia), Clifton Herndon, Jr., Kevin Anderson, and Kyle Anderson (Emily).
Ingeborg Klara Charlotte Rietzke Herndon was born in a suburb of Berlin, Potsdam, Germany. She was the oldest of three children, Charlotte and Dieter. In school, she studied theatre, dancing and accounting. After her father retired from the army, they moved to Berlin and a brownstone apartment building. This apartment was down the street from Tempelhof Airbase. At the end of the war, mother worked for the Americans at Tempelhof and this is where she met a man from Alabama named David Herndon. He was in the Army Air Corps as a fireman during the occupation of Berlin. They married and had a son, David, while he was stationed in Berlin. They married on November 6th, 1948 in Berlin. At the end of David’s, service they moved to Tuscaloosa in 1950.
David and Inge had four children, David, Linda, Ron and Mary. The couple raised their family in Tuscaloosa. Inge became an active member of the community. She was first a member of First Baptist Church where she taught the Five-year-old children’s Sunday School class for 27 years and sang in the choir. She worked for Sears for over thirty years and was a member of the American Businesswomen’s Association. She enjoyed traveling and visiting with family. Her family has many fond and fascinating stories that they will share for a long time to come.
