George C. Shelton, age 78, died on December 29th at his home in Coker. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, son, Steve Shelton, Northport, daughter and son in law, Adrienne and Don McGriff, Huntsville, grandson, Dax McGriff, Huntsville, granddaughter, Shea McGriff, Huntsville, sister, Nancy Atkinson, Roanoke, Virginia, and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
George was born in Roanoke, Virginia. He attended Virginia Tech, received a BS degree from East Tennessee State University, a MSW degree from Florida State University and did additional post graduate work at The University of Alabama.
George was the Executive Director of Family Counseling Services for 37 years prior to his retirement in 2006.
George was a member of the Tuscaloosa Civitan Club and served in many roles. He also served on several community service organization boards including Kentuck.
He was an active member of the Woodworkers Association of West Alabama and the Black Warrior Woodturners.
An avid woodworker, he produced furniture, hand turned bowls and other unique items. He supported many fundraising projects over the years with his generous donations of art. He taught woodturning at the John C Campbell Folk School as well as through the OLLI program at The University of Alabama. He was a mentor to many novice woodworkers.
Memorials may be made to Doctors without Borders, Prepare and Respond Disaster Relief (parforthecause.org) or the DCH Manderson Cancer Center.
A private memorial will be held at a later date.
