Dorothea Louise “Dot” Hine Rice died December 28, 2023 at the age of 98, at her residence in Tuscaloosa. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Tuscaloosa, on January 3, 2023 at 11:00 am. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Auxford Rice; daughters, Charlotte Louise Rice, and Rebecca “Becky” Amanda Rice Romano; son, Frank Auxford Rice, II; parents, Butler P.A. and Louise (Gilbert) Hine; and twin brothers, William Ernest and Butler P. Hine.
She is survived by her son, William E. “Bill” Rice (Laura) and daughters, Shirley, Lola, and Sally (Will); sons-in-law, Jon McMillan and Ted Romano and 12 grandchildren and numerous great- grandchildren.
Dot was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on October 11, 1925. Her family moved to Decatur, AL when she was a young child. She grew up in Decatur where she was active in her high school band as a majorette. Dot met her husband, Frank, while he was in Decatur training with the United States Air Force to become a pilot. They were married in Shreveport, LA on June 5th, 1945. They were married for 48 years living in Tuscaloosa where they raised their 7 children in Glendale Gardens.
Dot was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Fannie Lee Sunday school class. She enjoyed her volunteer work at DCH hospital for 34 years and for several years at Hospice of West Alabama where she served as a board member. Dot was a charter member of the Athenia Study Club and the Jester's Mardi Gras club. Dot's other interests included: The Southern Culture Club, Junior Welfare of Tuscaloosa, Twentieth Century Club of Gordo, Les-Amis Study Club, Gad-A-Bout Supper club, The Denny Society, and the Tuscaloosa Country Club supper club. Dot was an avid quilter and many family, friends, and hospice patients have enjoyed the comfort of her quilts. In Dot's later years she enjoyed traveling with her friends, church groups, and her brother, Butler. She also enjoyed a good game of dominoes and bridge with her friends.
Pallbearers are Judge Brad Almond, Bill Allen, Paul Jarvis, Chris Kyle, Jon McMillan, Dr.
George Nunn, Hugh Mallette, Eric Murray, and Stacy Williams.
The family wishes to thank her loving caregivers: Ella Williams, Effie Vaughn, Becky Bowling, and Ramona Wright. They would also like to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice of West Alabama.
