Born on Dec. 7th 1929 to the late Ida Bell and Emmett Offie Cantrell, Doris was raised in Haleyville, Alabama.
In 1949, after marrying her high school sweetheart and true partner in life the late Carl Knight, she moved to Tuscaloosa where she has lived the last 70 years. In Tuscaloosa she became a successful business woman, a church and community volunteer and raised her three girls.
Doris was involved in many organizations such as the Tuscaloosa Junior League, the
Belle Arts Study Club and Investment Club. She was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist church and the Feldisis Sunday school class.
Doris is known for many things, but she is known most of all for her store the Kiddie Korner that she owned for 30 years. She had a knack for retail and knew what it took to run a successful children’s store. She bought and sold beautiful children’s clothes but her greatest gift was how she treated her customers and employees. She did not care what social status, race or background you were; she was there to help and serve you. Even now, stories are told of her interaction with her customers and times she was a source of encouragement and help.
Her biggest source of pride was always her marriage to the love of her life Carl, her three girls and her grandchildren. Her daughters will carry forever the lessons learned of commitment, being loving, kind and compassionate. Doing your best and working hard. Being loyal and caring to your family and friends. Most of all, walking Christ walk, not just talking the talk.
Doris smile would light up a room. And with that smile would come a heartfelt compliment or a word of encouragement.
Loving, devoted, loyal, smart and with a beautiful soul, Doris was always there for her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by many.
She is survived by her daughters Marsha Stewart (David), Teresa Chambers (Jimmy), and Carla Nesbitt (Doug). Grandchildren: Heather Stewart, Whitney Stewart (Ben), Rebecca, Rachel and Carl Nesbitt. Step grandson Jimmy Chambers (Calene) and great grandchildren Evelyn and Ethan Chambers. Her sister Carolyn Goley (Jack) and many nieces and nephews.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the staff of Traditions Way and Yvonne Boyd.
