Our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Edna Wiley passed away Jan. 5, 2012, from effects of a widespread type of cancer. Born in New Lexington in Tuscaloosa County in 1923 to James and Nora Braselton, she grew up in hard times. Her only sibling, her brother William Perry Braselton, died at a young age.
Edna maintained a courageous outlook and spirit right up to her death. Her family and her many friends will miss having her life's example and her strong faith in God in their lives.
Edna was a lifelong member of the Church of the Nazarene, most recently Woodhaven Church, and actively supported various church activities and programs. She sang in the choir for a time and offered harmonica songs, as well as participating in seasonal programs and bible studies. She strongly supported her church spiritually and through contributions.
She especially devoted herself to helping others with their needs, including offering transportation and errands and visiting and sitting with them in hospitals or nursing facilities. She volunteered at Hospice of West Alabama weekly, served as treasurer of the Widowed Persons Group at FOCUS, sang with a volunteer choir at various nursing homes, and attended the National Association of Federal Retired Employees. Edna was employed for 16 years at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center.
Edna was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William Burnice Wiley, who she married just prior to his being sent to the Pacific Theater of World War II; her son, William David Wiley; and her special and dear friend, Robert “Bob” Brantley.
Survivors include her sons, John Leslie Wiley (Donna) of Newport News, Va. and Gary Lloyd Wiley (Cindy) of Elkmont, Ala.; her daughter-in-law, Patsy Ann Wiley of Tuscaloosa; her grandchildren, Amy, Susan, Danny, Chris, Daniel, and Candace; and five great-grandchildren, Dalton, Lucas, Lawson, Kaden, and Preston.
Pallbearers will be Danny Wiley, Chris Wiley, Daniel Wiley, Jay Smith, Larry Boshell, and Jack Williamson.
Honorary pallbearers are her neighbors, church friends, doctors, nurses, and all her friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cancer Society of West Alabama or Woodhaven Church of the Nazarene in remembrance of Clarice Edna Wiley.
