Barbara departed this life and went to her Heavenly home on Saturday, June 22, 2024. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Bonner, brother, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Memory Hill Gardens.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oneal and Lucille Bonner; brothers: Harry Bonner, Lewis Bonner, Jerry Bonner; sisters: Jane Watkins, Glenna Teutsch, Kate Woolworth; granddaughter, Hannah Shields, and grandson Jonathan Holmes.
Survivors include her husband, Tillman Rotha Shields, sons Terry(Teresa)Shields, Tim(Connie)Shields, and Tommy(Lisa)Shields. Brothers, David Bonner and Larry(Robin)Bonner. Ten grandchildren: Jennifer Ayers, Edward McDaniel, Jeremy McDaniel, Matthew Shields, Savanna Perez, Faith Shields, Jennifer Gonnering, Brandon Shields, Elisabeth Cronan, and Andrew Shields. Fifteen great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was born on May 16, 1937 in Pickens County, grew up in Gordo, then moved to Tuscaloosa in 1947. Over the years she worked various jobs, starting at a retail shop Smart ‘n Thrifty, H & W Drug, Kress’s, the VA hospital- canteen and laundry, and later in life for the Corp of Engineers as a camp host with her husband of 65 years.
She had many hobbies including: gardening, camping, craft making, and story telling. She was very creative and made up stories, that she loved to share with family and friends. She displayed her artistic ability by drawing. You were fortunate if you received a card with a hand drawn stamp on it, which she delivered in person, of course. She had a big heart and loved everybody. The joy of her life was her husband, kids, and grandkids. She always would say, “they melt my heart”!
Pallbearers will be grandsons: Jeremy McDaniel, Matthew Shields, Brandon Shields, Andrew Shields, Lance Ayers, Chase Cronan, Paul Gonnering, Ebenecer Perez, and Edward McDaniel.
Honorary pallbearers are J. D. and Rhonda Shelton, Dr. Bergman, Amedysis Hospice, Barbara and Leon Wyatt, and friends and neighbors of Clements Road(Hazelhurst community).
