NORTHPORT - Alvin Leamon Pilkinton, Sr., of Northport, Alabama passed away on September 25, 2018 at age 93 from pancreatic cancer. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who enjoyed being with people. He worked hard, loved to eat a great meal, and piddled!
He was born in Florence, Alabama on January 9, 1925 to the late Horace Alvin and Daisy Belle Taylor Pilkinton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Elizabeth Moore Pilkinton and a sister, Emma Nola Bunch Harrison.
He is survived by five brothers, Marion Odell, James Shelton, Roy McEwen, Robert Dale, and Norman Eugene. He is also survived by two children and their spouses, Alvin L. Pilkinton, Jr. and his wife, Roseann, of Stone Mountain, Ga. and Suzanne Elizabeth Cunningham and her husband, Duane, of Northport, Ala.; one granddaughter, Catherine Anne Baker and her husband, Brian, of Stone Mountain, Ga.; one great-granddaughter, Belle Katrine Baker, of Stone Mountain, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.
Alvin graduated from North High School in Nashville, Tenn. He was immediately drafted by the United States Army for three years of active military duty during World War II. He returned to Nashville after being honorably discharged and built a new home for his parents. He soon married Martha Elizabeth Moore in 1947. He worked as a mechanic at Kraft Foods and transferred from Nashville, Tenn. to the new Atlanta, Ga. plant in 1952 where he raised his family and resided until after retirement.
Alvin eventually moved to Northport, Ala. so his daughter, Suzanne, could help in providing care for his wife and her mother as Martha's health failed. He was known for enjoying church socials and family meals, working hard, being thrifty, not worrying, being patient, helping others, his friendliness, and woodworking skills. He made many wood crafts and built many swings and chairs that are still enjoyed by his family and friends.
Everyone looked forward to seeing him at University of Alabama ball games. He was a member of the Church of Christ at Campus, Avondale, and Kirkwood in Georgia and Reid Avenue in Nashville, Tenn. He most recently attended University Church of Christ in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, September 28, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at Woodlawn Roesch-Patton Funeral Home & Memorial Park on Thompson Lane in Nashville, Tenn. Gathering of family and friends will be one hour prior to the service.
