Dr. Richard Fredrick McDermot passed away in Olympia, WA on March 28, 2013 after a long struggle with cancer. He died at home in the loving company of his wife, Joanna, and son Dennis. He was 76 years old. He is survived by his wife Joanna, brother Ron, sons Dennis and Martin, daughter in law Cynthia, and grandson Dean. Dr McDermot taught mathematics and computer science at Allegheny College until his retirement in 1998. He was an active member of the American Mathematical Association, where he led the development of the summer short course in mathematics. Dr McDermot was an avid naturalist, field botanist, and wildflower photographer. He had a love for music which he expressed through singing with the Allegheny College Chorus. He was a member of the Episcopal church, where he sang in choir and served as a lay reader.
