John W. Ritchie, age 69, of Olympia Washington suffered a pulmonary embolism and sadly passed away New Year's morning, Saturday, January 1st, 2022. John was born in Lancaster Pennsylvania July 6th, 1952.
In 1986 JR, "Roofer John" responded to a single-mother’s call to fix her roof. Little did any of us know, this would become his forever family. John and Sue quickly built a strong and very loving relationship, and 7 short years later asked Sue's son Chris for his mother's hand in marriage. John and Sue were married on December 30th, 1993.
Over the course of John’s life, his family grew. He is survived by his Wife Sue Ellen Ritchie; his Son & Daughter-In-Law, Chris & May Reed; his Daughter and Son-In-Law, Kelli & Alex Kinney; his five Grandchildren, Anthony, Ashley, Eli, Emma & Ella; his Mother Mary Ritchie; and his Sister, Sharon Ritchie. In 1977 John had a tragic house fire and was preceded in death by his two young Sons Darrel Lee age 4, and Gary James age 2.
John was so proud of his family, yet humble in every other way. He overcame a past of addiction, and was excited to celebrate 38 years of sobriety on January 3rd. He also supported countless others on their journey through sobriety. John was a dedicated Husband, Father and "Grandpa John", loving and supporting his family as much as any man could, with the patience of a saint, the determination of a bull, and a heart of gold. John loved road trips to the beach with his Wife. He loved drag racing with his Son and oldest Grandson, who will continue the legacy. John enjoyed an annual trip to Pomona raceway with friends. He enjoyed poker nights with the guys, and “Go Fish” with his Granddaughters. John was happiest when he was helping others - his servant’s heart was bottomless, and he is greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in John’s name to the Thurston County Humane Society.
