Betty Nye, who was born Betty Jean McInnis in Olympia on December 31, 1936, died on October 19, 2011. She is preceded in death by her father, Elmo McInnis, her mother, Frieda Eickhoff McInnis (later Jorgensen), her brother, William McInnis, and her adoring and adored husband, Gene Nye. Betty is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Croy and Karen Short; her nieces and nephews, Darcy McInnis, Kathy Chavez, Jeff McInnis, Dan Nye, Wendy Kramer, Don Nye, and Melissa Nye and their spouses and children; and her faithful canine companion Maxx. Family was a great source of pride and joy for Betty, who also made friends easily. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In her younger days, Betty worked for the State of Washington. One day while waiting in the chiropractor's office she met the love of her life, Gene Nye. Betty and Gene married in September 1967 and created a beautiful life together that included family, friends, many outings, the construction of their dream home on the West Side, and their abiding love for each other. Betty’s heartache at the loss of Gene in 2002 was lessened by the joy of having her mom, Frieda, move in with her. Betty and her mom created a mirth-filled home together and welcomed many visitors in to share in laughter and song. Betty could brighten any room with her laugh and unabashed silliness. She was simply a joy to be around.
Betty was a generous supporter of many charities. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Betty’s memory be made to the Thurston County Food Bank Christmas Stocking Project, 220 Thurston Ave NE, Olympia, 98501.
