Allen E. Madison Born January 20, 1916 in Darby, Montana to Fred H. Madison and Rebecca LaLonde Madison, Allen passed peacefully April 19, 2012 in Lacey, WA. Growing up in Montana, he was an excellent athlete and enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. He worked for farmers and developed a deep love for horses, which was later reflected in his wood carvings. Allen worked at Fort Peck during the dam construction. He was interested in commercial art and architecture and became a teacher on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in 1937. Allen and Modie were married June 19, 1938. He graduated from Northern Montana College in August and they returned to the Blackfoot reservation for a teaching position at headquarters. In 1939 they moved to the Sioux reservation to take a teaching position requiring a married couple. They organized 4-H clubs for the boys and girls, and Allen coached and refereed sports. The attack on Pearl Harbor changed the course of Allen's life. He immediately looked for an opportunity to get into war work and took an engineering position at the Lake Washington Shipyards. Sons Hal, Len, and Jim were all born while they lived in Kirkland. After the war, Allen went to work for the Washington State Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1979. In 1950 the family moved to Olympia with a job transfer to WSDOT headquarters and later bought their first home in Tumwater. Allen was active in Boy Scouts, Rotary, Capital Woodcarvers, and United Churches of Olympia. He was an avid booster of Tumwater High School Athletics. Allen was preceded in death by wife Mozella, brother Dave, sisters Gertrude and Ruth. He is survived by his brother Ted, sons Harold, Leonard, and James, their wives, 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. A memorial service open to all will be held at 1:30pm May 5, 2012 at Mills & Mills, 5725 Littlerock Rd. SW, Tumwater, WA. Donations can be made to Boy Scouts of America or Rotary International.
