Helen Marie Sheppard, 84 died on July 2, 2020 at her home in Tucson Arizona. She was born April 19, 1936 in Olney, Oklahoma to Bryan and Stella Stover. In 1954, she graduated from Wetumka High School (Oklahoma) and continued her education at Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas and then Oklahoma University. She married her high school sweetheart, Jim Sheppard in 1957.
Although physically separated from her church family for years due to poor health, she remained a part of the Palo Verde church of Christ. She was a great lady in the church, teaching ladies’ Bible classes and teenage girls. “Teacher Helen” was a blessing to generations of children who loved her as she loved them. She also devoted herself to caring for the elderly and for widows in her congregation. Those privileged to know her well and watch her in action received a master class in how to be a G-mom.
Helen taught junior high and high school English (1977 to 1980) at Main Avenue Christian Academy in Orangevale, California. She was also the administrator there from 1980-81. Helen was known for her sewing, especially applique quilts which are treasured by family and friends. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and preparing delicious meals for special family occasions. She was also known for her pep-talks that inspired us all. Throughout her life she mailed hundreds of hand-written notes, cards and letters to encourage others.
Helen is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jim Sheppard, her three children, Jon and wife Kim, Joni and husband David, and Jeff; her two grandchildren Gregory and wife Noreen, Katie and husband Brendan Livingston; and four great grandchildren, Madalyn 9, Nicholas 4, Amelia 2 and Sterling Belle 2.
