My Personal Trainer
After a yearlong battle with lung cancer, our beloved Fredie passed away at her Tucson home November 19, 2018. She is survived by her son Claude (Bear) Bailey, husband Paul Martin and four siblings: Mari Kastle, Lisa Schaus, Carl Joseph Schaus, Christian Schaus and her five cats: Cielo, Kondo, Minou, Flynn and Alfred. Frederica was born in Schenectady New York to Fritz and Doris Schaus. After a successful business career in fitness in New York, Frederica moved to Salt Lake City and continued her career in fitness as an instructor and personal trainer. She quickly became known for her strenuous and fun classes, as well as challenging and informative personal training sessions. With a thousand watt smile and engaging personality, she quickly became a mentor, icon and subject of fond conversation in the Salt Lake fitness scene.
After 20 years in the SLC area, Fredie and her husband it was time to slow down a bit, start to consider future retirement and get closer to family. In 2012 they made the leap to Tucson Arizona, for the warmer climate and to be closer to her son Bear. She decided to take a break for teaching and personal training and at age 65, focus again on her fitness goals. With beautiful trails close by, and decent size pool in the yard and the personal training equipment she brought from SLC, she embarked on a fitness regime that would put a younger person (namely ME) to shame: 3-5 mile runs twice a week, weight training workouts 3 times a week, and swimming nearly every day, always comparing what she did this year vs. last. Always striving to be better. And while moving forward with her fitness goals, there was something missing: the social interaction and comradery that accompanied working with the public. At the urging of her neighbor, she applied for positions at the Canyon Ranch, and was excited to find out it was just a few miles from the house. She was hired on as a trail guide/fitness walker, and found her new love, as well as meeting a group of wonderful folks working there that shared her enthusiasm for fitness. Never an early riser, Frederica dove in to the early morning walks, getting up as early as 4:45am to be fully prepared. Whenever I was home, she never failed to come back from these walks with tons of energy, a big smile and a new story about all the great people she got to walk and converse with. Being a bit of a rebel, Fredie strayed from the designated uniform and wore colorful fitness wear, and began her signature look: a vibrant flower attached to her hair or hat that the yearly visitors would ask for “the lady with the flower in her hair”. She loved her time at Canyon Ranch, heart and soul.
Upon hearing the news of Fredie’s passing, many friends and clients from the SLC area have expressed their admiration and appreciation for how Fredie influenced their lives while under her care. She was an inspiration to all who she touched, with her smile, laugh and friendly demeanor she was certainly unforgettable. She will be missed by all that know her, and those that just met her briefly.
Below is a poem written by a close friend from SLC which I believe capture the essence of Fredie:
She loved to swim and loved to run
She loved to work out or sit in the sun
Her hip style of the time wearing ponytails two,
Sharing dinner and wine , talks and laughs the years through
Now today she’s missed each sweet cat so we say whenever we can,
But a broken heart will be just that, Remember her sharing all her love with Paul
Her forever man.
With an unforgettable smile, a captivating laugh and truly friendly personality, the world will surely miss her. I know I will. She was one in a million.
