Sadie attended and graduated from Merle Grove High School in Kingston, Jamaica. After graduation she returned to Montego Bay and became the manager of Stewart Furniture Store. There she developed her superb bookkeeping and money management skills.
Sadie was an ambitious mother, with the goal of achieving success for herself and her family. To afford herself a greater chance of achieving that success, Sadie seized the opportunity to come to America in 1970. In coming to America, she left her children Opal, Garth, Marlene, Peter, and Georgette with her family back home in Jamaica.
Sadie first settled in Virginia, where she adjusted to the nuances and foreign culture of her new environment. During this assimilation period, Sadie remained goal oriented and was never dissuaded from her mission of providing a better life for herself and her children. After living and working for several years in Virginia, Sadie realized that moving to New York City would likely allow her to fast track the reunification of her family as well as the achievement of her goals.
Stemming from a burning passion to help others, Sadie became a Certified Nurses Assistant, paving the road to her success. She then reunited with her family and purchased a home in Bronx, NY. It was here that she watched her children and grandchildren grow and achieve successes of their own.
Sadie grew to be a compassionate and loving mother, friend, and grandmother. Over the years friends, family and co-workers have shared many stories highlighting Sadie’s acute sense of humor, jolly disposition, and loving ways.
Sadie had many hobbies which brought her great pleasure. She enjoyed cooking, shopping, and sewing. She was a wonderful dancer. She never missed a beat and was entertaining to watch.
In addition to her extraordinary dancing skills, her cooking and baking skills were superb! She was renowned for her carrot and humming-bird cake. They were finger licking good to the very last crumb.
After a successful career as a CNA, Sadie retired from Pelham Parkway Nursing Home at the age of 62. She then relocated to Covington, Georgia, where her dedication to the Lord and serving others, continued in her membership with the Narrow Way Pentecostal Church. She became the churches honorary mother, and was “Grandma” to most of the church’s youth.
We will not grieve Sadie’s departure, but we will celebrate her life with the same passion with which she lived. We will remember her distinct laughter, her kind and loving spirit, and her desire to always lend a helping hand to those who needed it. She was sincerely loved and will be forever missed.
