Mrs. Newman is survived by a son, David Newman (Carrie) of Snellville; a daughter, Valerie Newman of Loganville; three grandchildren, Savannah Newman, Dawson Newman, and Chloe Newman of Snellville; one sister Katrina Lord of Dublin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Newman of Snellville; two sisters, Mary Kay Smith of Rentz and Jocelyn Alford of Montrose; a brother, Dalton Watson of Rentz; and her parents Robert Melton and Dessie Watson of Rentz.
Mrs. Newman was born in Dexter on October 29, 1940. She grew up in Rentz and after graduating from high school moved to Atlanta where she attended Crawford W. Long School of Nursing. On October 21, 1962, she married her husband Bill. They lived in Chamblee, raising their children there. They were charter members of Northeast Baptist Church where she worked with senior adults, taught Vacation Bible School, and volunteered for the Wheels on Meals Program. Later, when they joined and became active members of Briarlake Baptist Church in Decatur, she served as a children’s Sunday School teacher, worked in Vacation Bible School, and chaperoned summer camps .
Mrs. Newman worked as an RN at Wesley Woods Nursing Home, Tucker Nursing Home, and Piedmont Hospital. In retirement she and her husband moved to Snellville to be closer to their children and grandchildren. She lived there until she moved to assisted living at The Retreat at Loganville.
She was very active in her church family and served in any way she could. She was a great mom, wife, grandparent, and friend. She attended every ball game and activity of her children and grandchildren as long as she was able. She loved her family, church family, and friends! She loved gardening and plants, going to garage sales, cooking, and shopping.
A funeral service is scheduled for 12:00 noon on Saturday, September 21, at the Briarlake Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Charles Alligood officiating. The family will be available for visitation one hour before the service. Flowers may be sent to Floral Hills Memory Garden on Lawrenceville Highway In Tucker.
