Robert Philip Schlegel passed away peacefully May 19, 2017 at home in Beulah, MI surrounded by loving family and pets. “Buckeye Bob” is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marylou (Peters) Schlegel, his three children, Debra (John) Dur of Henniker, NH, Edward (Barbara) Schlegel of Lithopolis, OH and Dana (Richard) Lundewall of Beulah, MI, twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Born in Columbus, OH on May 23, 1929, Bob graduated from West High School and Capital University in Columbus, was a Navy veteran and later attended a graduate program at Harvard Business School. He and “Pete” (Marylou) married in 1952. Bob’s long and remarkable career with Miles Laboratories, moved them to Cincinnati, OH; Elkhart, IN; Chicago, IL; Toronto, Canada; Tokyo, Japan and extensive travels around the world.
Bob retired from Miles Laboratories as the President of Ames Division in 1988 and moved to San Diego, CA to work with Intermark, Inc. He returned to Ohio and founded DIRAmed LLC, developing new technology in the field of non-invasive blood glucose monitoring, continuing as its Chairman of the Board of Members and Business Development.
Bob has been a lifelong Ohio State Buckeye fan, sporting his beloved Buckeyes’ scarlet and gray almost exclusively, and hosting his famous tailgate parties. In 1982, he was officially recognized as an Ohio State Buckeye Super Fan.
In 2007, Bob and Pete moved from Lithopolis, OH back to Beulah, MI where Bob spent summers as a child on Crystal Lake and had their lakeside home since 1972 proudly flying his Ohio State flags and cheering for his Buckeyes deep in Michigan Wolverine country.
