Alice Rose Smith, age 86, of Traverse City, died on Sunday, July 2, 2017, at the Grand Traverse Pavillions in Traverse City, Michigan. Alice was born on April 10, 1931, in Traverse City, Michigan, to Leo and Rose (Bosse) Gauthier. After spending her early years in Maple City, the family moved to Traverse City where she remained a lifetime resident.
Alice married Irvin “Smitty” Smith on May 28, 1949 at St. Francis Parish in Traverse City. He preceded her in death in 1993. Even though Alice devoted her time to her family first, she was also involved in a number of organizations. She was a life member of the VFW Auxillary Post #2780, was a 30+ year member of the TOPS organization, a parishioner of St. Francis Church in Traverse City, and also worked in the fine arts building at the Northwestern Michigan Fair for over ten years.
Alice loved her crossword and word search puzzles, was a Detroit Tiger and Red Wing Hockey fan, and was very patriotic. As her children were growing up, their home was a place where all the neighborhood children were always welcome.
She is survived by her children; Michael (Ruth) Smith of Traverse City, Lawrence (Terri) Smith of Virginia, Sharon (David) McWethy of Traverse City, Jeffery (April) Smith of Traverse City and Carol (Gary) John of Traverse City. Also surviving are grandchildren; Amy Smith, Brandi Ingold, Stephanie Washington, Ron and Kirk McWethy, Jason, Sarah, Elizabeth and Jonathan Smith, and Shaun and Ben Smedley 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 7, 201,7 from the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City at 12:30 p.m. Visitation at the funeral home was on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service, Fr. Ben Rexroat officiating. Inurnment was held at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens at a later date.
The family extended a special thank you to the staff at both Bortz/Villa of Traverse City and the Grand Traverse Pavillions for the wonderful care they gave Alice.
Memorial contributions in her memory were directed to the Father Fred Foundation. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City.
