Maria passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2010. Maria is survived by her husband Juventino; her four children Angela, Regina, JR and Emily; her parents Lefanoga and Sandra Asoau; loving aunts and uncles; her many precious brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews; and her “Furry Grandchildren”. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, Fa’apisa & Ofisa Asoau and Rose & Bud Branzuela; her niece Samantha Moreno and her nephews Junior Asoau and Albert Caldera.
Maria was born at San Pedro Hospital on June 28, 1960. She spent some of her childhood in San Francisco, but most of her life was spent in her hometown of San Pedro. She was a proud member of the SPHS Class of ’78 and went on to raise her children in San Pedro schools. A born nurturer, she touched the lives of many area youth by serving as a teacher’s aide at Taper Avenue Elementary, managed youth carriers for the News-Pilot, and she especially felt called to teach children about God as a religious educator for both Mary Star and Holy Trinity. Her compassion carried into her professional life at Kaiser Permanente, Harbor City where she served as a union steward and lead many teams for the annual Diabetes walk. Maria loved to volunteer her time to many other organizations such as San Pedro AYSO, Dodson drama, and the San Pedro Lady Boosters to name a few. She was the world’s cheerleader and photographer and will be greatly missed.
Viewing will be held Wednesday October 13th from 4pm – 8pm at Halverson, Stone & Myers Mortuary 1223 Cravens St, Torrance. Funeral Mass will be held Thursday October 14th at 10am at Holy Trinity Church, 209 Hanford Ave, San Pedro; the reception will follow the gravesite at Holy Trinity Parish Center. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in her honor to the American Diabetes Association.
