On April 30, 1967, a precious gift was given to Alvin “Smokey” Guillory and his wife Daisy L. and they named him Glenn “Avery” (after Smokey’s maternal grandfather).
Glenn had many challenges in life, but by sheer determination on his part, he met them head on, and overcame them all. Glenn was a graduate of Gardena High School in the class of 1986. In a special needs class, Glenn asked to be tutored so he could earn a diploma instead of receiving a certificate. He graduated with a 3.70 GPA, earning the Presidential Award, signed by President Ronald Reagan.
Glenn worked at Westside Regional Center in Culver City as a mail sorter and distributor, while he attended computer classes at Access Computer from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. He worked in the same building from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., five days per week as long as his body allowed. He attended Exceptional Children’s Foundation for over 10 years, where he learned arts and crafts, winning blue ribbons and monetary awards for many of his paintings.
Glenn never complained. He touched many lives everywhere he went. Everybody remembered him, and always had a story to tell concerning him. He had a smile that would light up a room. The Pastor, members and supervisor at Calvary Church welcomed him, when his illness allowed him to attend, and always made him feel special. He loved them all.
On May 19, God decided that he had “fought a good fight”, and “well done thy good and faithful servant”. Early that Saturday morning, as he slept, God dispatched His angel to come and take him home.
Glenn was preceded in death by his father, Alvin “Smokey” Guillory, Jr., grandparents, Morris and Dorothy Belle Joseph, Alvin, Sr. and Helen Guillory; Uncles – Marvin, Sr. and Martin Joseph, Sr., aunt – Alberta Orphey-Sims.
