Gerry passed away peacefully at the Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre on May 1, 2023. Born in Toronto on October 16, 1932. Gerry's greatest joy was his family: his much-loved wife, Carole (nee Angell), children Margaret (Kevin Tucker), Jeff (Sonya), Kathy, Rob (Kim), Norm and Barb (Mark Robinson) nine grandchildren Andrew (Kristin), Matthew, Greg, Brendan, David, Sarah, Ben, Colleen, and Lucy and his four great-grandchildren, Kalia, Samantha, Johnny and Amelia.
He grew up in North Toronto to parents Roland and Kay (nee Thornton) and sister Shirley (predeceased). At Northern Secondary School he developed a love of football which he shared with the family at our annual Grey Cup parties. At the University of Toronto, he studied Business and had a successful career in human resources working at Eaton’s and the LCBO, and later was appointed to the Immigration and Refugee Board.
He married Carole in 1959 and they created a loving home; annual holidays at YMCA Geneva Park, backyard rinks, garage sales, family breakfasts, cheering on grandkids and always up for hosting a dinner party.
He was involved in various causes and kept abreast of politics. Some of his achievements included being a member of the North York Y’s Men’s Club dedicating years of leadership and service and a presenter of the ABCs of Fraud. A founding member of the Coalition for Citizens for Lifelong Learning which was formed when the government threatened to cancel the funding for TDSB seniors’ daytime and adult programing. As a result, they successfully reversed the decision, and he continued as a member of the TDSB Community Advisory Committee.
Hobbies included tinkering with cars, restoring his 1927 Ford Model T, Thornhill Cruiser Car Club and the Historical Automobile Society of Canada. Continuing education classes in Auto Mechanics and Furniture Refinishing, the Living and Learning in Retirement (LLIR) at Glendon Campus, Seniors Aquafit and the Ontario Vintage Radio Association where he spent many happy hours repairing antique radios.
Gerry was a true gentleman, a great listener and had a terrific sense of humour. He will be missed!
