Nora Barbara Wieczorek nee Waller passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Toronto on February 8th, 2023. She was born to Duncan and Leona Waller in Brantford, Ontario in 1932. The family lived in many places throughout Southern Ontario, and eventually settled in Mimico, where Nora met her beloved Stanley (Stan).
Nora attended the University of Toronto where she made many lifelong friends, graduating in 1955 with a diploma in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. It was during the long streetcar rides to U of T where her relationship with fellow-commuter Stan blossomed, culminating in marriage in 1957.
Nora and Stan shared 45 years of a busy and happy married life together before Stan’s passing. They raised six children and lived in many different cities: Toronto, Windsor, Montreal, London and back to Toronto. They made and nurtured many special friendships in each place they lived. Nora worked part time at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital (now St. Joseph's Health Centre), physiotherapy clinics in London and Toronto, and at Ina Grafton Gage Retirement home.
In Nora’s retirement she enjoyed many games of bridge, rounds of golf at the Thornhill Club and volunteered much of her time to Centennial Infant and Child Centre, Out of the Cold and Sunnybrook’s cancer care clinic. She also enjoyed extensive travel around the world with dear friends and family. Most dear to Nora was time spent with her cherished children and their partners, treasured grandchildren/partners and precious great granddaughter.
Nora was so many things. Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Mother-in-law extraordinaire, not to mention a caring physiotherapist. Beginning with her relationships with her sister Therese and brother Gerry, Nora genuinely cared for everyone she met. She had a gift of making people feel special. She was quietly determined in her life and in her final days, passing peacefully, comforted by her unwavering faith. Her family banded together as she taught us to do, and we are all so very grateful for the team that she and Dad created. We will miss her every day, and will keep her in our hearts forever, happy knowing that she is now with her beloved Stan.
She leaves behind her children Elyn (Cameron Smith), Michael (Emily Cole), Sheila (Rob Kee), Paul (Alexandra Andric), Barbara (Clare Johnston) and Karen (Dave Quigley). Loving Grandmother to Christopher (Rebecca), Ryan, Katie, Jane (Nelson), Alec, Heather (Sean), Michelle (Noah), Peter, Jack (Jordy), William, Jessica and Sam, and Great Grandmother to Adelyn. Devoted Sister to Therese Verkuyl (predeceased by her husband, Giles) and Gerry Waller and kind hearted Aunt to Cathy, Suzanne, Paul and Laurence.
Special thanks to the Palliative team at Sunnybrook who worked so hard to accommodate us all and take such good care of Mom, especially Dr Walji, Danielle and Bayoush.
Visitation will take place at Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home 467 Sherbourne Street (South of Wellesley St.) on Tuesday February 14th between 4:00-8:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church 24 Cheritan Avenue, Toronto on Wednesday February 15th at 11:00 am with reception to follow.
