On June 1, 2024, Lawrence “Larry” William Evan Scott passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto at the age of 68, surrounded by his family. Larry is survived by his wife, Mary Jane (née Pickup); his children, Lauren and William “Liam”; and his siblings, Greg (Cheryl) and Michelle (Paul). He was a devoted uncle to his nieces and nephews, Callie (Max), Brittany, Kate, David (Jeana), James (Jen), Jonathan (Jamie), the late Heather, and Megan (Graeme); and to his great-nephews and -niece, Hatcher, Colton, Callie, and Henry. He will be fondly remembered by his stepfather, Ken Kennedy; Ken’s daughter, Kathryn (Michael); and their family. Larry was a wonderful son-in-law to the late Joseph and Mary Pickup. He was a cherished brother-in-law to the late Joe (Marilyn), Jim (Carol), Marg (Trevor), and Eleanor.
Larry was born on April 14, 1956, also at St. Michael’s Hospital, to his late parents, Beryl Scott Kennedy (née Boyden) and William Scott. Larry spent a quintessential Canadian boyhood working on his uncle’s farm near Rice Lake in the summer and playing hockey on his backyard rink. In 1969, he met his life-long best friend Peter Copp (Joan), a fellow Pee Wee on the Agincourt Lions.
Larry’s youthful adventures ranged from professional ski patrolling to running a small construction company, inspiring picaresque tales that would later enthrall his children. Consulting was a natural fit for his remarkable range of talents and innate helpfulness. Larry’s business acumen, empathy, tenacity, and good humour characterized his nearly 40 years at Touche Ross/Deloitte. He retired as Global Chief Strategy Officer but continued to advise the firm on key strategic issues.
Larry was a perfect husband, a devoted dad, a loyal friend, a generous mentor, and a brilliant partner. To know him was to love him. He will be dearly missed. Donations in Larry’s memory can be made in support of oncology research at SickKids, where he served for many years on the Board of Trustees.
Larry will be interred at the Toronto Necropolis following a private service. A Celebration of Life is planned.
