The family of Jon Metcalfe is sad to announce his passing on Monday, December 12 in Toronto. He was 77 years old and a retired, long time Sears employee.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gladys and Gerald Metcalfe and his sister, Catherine, all of Ottawa and he leaves behind a brother, Michael along with Michael’s wife, Barbara.
After a number of years on the west coast, Jon returned to Toronto where he enjoyed life in the city’s vibrant core. Very much his own person, he nonetheless dedicated much of his time as an incredibly dedicated volunteer at St. Michael’s Hospital. Having been a patient there, it was his way of giving back and it will come as no surprise that Jon was both well known and well liked.
He could also be found helping out at Good Tymes, a neighbourhood pub. It was one of his favourite haunts and he was in his ‘happy-place’ doing what he enjoyed so much — chatting up the locals.
Although many kilometres kept him from regular contact with his nieces and nephew, he maintained a love for all of them including Krista Kennedy, Karin Metcalfe, Keri Metcalfe, Garth Grant, and Emily Fieguth. Any time he had a chance to visit, he savoured every moment and it was only too clear that his family adored him.
He also leaves behind a number of great nieces, nephews and extended family members, both in Southern and Eastern Ontario.
As an added benefit to Jon, Garth and Emily were close by and able to provide wonderful assistance any time he needed it. A special mention should be made to friend, Elizabeth Bernardt who was alway there to help him attend his appointments.
Jon has been cremated and while details need to be finalized, Jon will be laid to rest at Ottawa’s Capital Memorial Gardens later this year.
