Left us far too soon on July 11, 2023 at the age of 51. Devoted husband and life adventurer of Charlotte. Much loved brother to Lorna. Treasured son of Edward and Beatrice. Cherished brother-in-law to Mike and Charlotte. Dear son-in-law to Dorothy and Ray. Amazing paw-rent to several furry companions, most recently to Pepper and Quinn.
Jan’s departure has left a void in our lives that will never be filled. He wanted to be and was everything to everybody – giver of gifts, mentor, comedian, supportive confidante, problem solver, curious listener, and connector of people. We didn’t just discover “who” Jan was in the end. He actively lived each and every day in a powerful and teaching way.
He deeply adored and respected Charlotte and gave her the best possible life imaginable together full of love, laughs and spontaneity. He opened the world to her through his many passions like art, travel, music and 80s nostalgia - leaving endless memories to help mend her broken heart.
There was no end to Jan’s talents – whatever he set his mind out to do, he accomplished it. Scuba diving, new cooking techniques, racquet sports, home improvement.
Music was his oxygen. He loved listening, playing, and talking about it. He would write about his love of music: “Listen” often. And don’t be shy to hit replay, and always share with your friends. Sharing is caring.
Some of Jan’s most freeing moments and those of absolute joy were playing with the Rock Bottom bandmates and seeing that moment when everyone locks in on stage.
Jan had a beautiful network of friends that he cared deeply about who have provided great support and comfort at this difficult time. You know who you are. And his link with Satesh and Shawn will always endure.
Always one to push the envelope, be a little provocative, and be on the leading edge – creative to the core, sharp witted and authentic, always up on the latest trends and tech, and was the unofficial inventor of the selfie in the 90s.
At Jan’s request, there will be no service. Details about a celebration of Jan’s life to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Michael Garron Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit would be appreciated (https://www.mghf.ca/). We would like to thank Dr. Michael Warner, the Nursing staff, in particular Alan, Emily, Kaniz and Shannon, the Respiratory Therapists and other ICU staff for such exceptional care of Jan and compassionate support to his family.
In Jan’s words “The simplest thing you can do is tell the one’s you love, is that you love them.”
In his honour, be good to yourself as he was good to all of us – buy tickets to that show, play some pinball, splurge on a nice meal, and laugh freely and out loud.
In keeping true to Jan’s storytelling spirit, please share your fondest memory of him below.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.giffenmackdanforth.com for Jan's family.
