Died peacefully on Friday, November 22, 2013 ast Rene Goupil House, Pickering, ON in his 100th year and 80th year in religious life. Jim was born on March 30th, 1914 in Saint John, New Brunswick to Lawrence Murphy and Annie Wallace. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1934 and was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1947 in Colombia. After a year of special studies in Chemistry in Toronto he entered his major life’s work at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax as Lecturer and then Professor in Chemistry, ending his work there (1954-2006) as Professor Emeritus. He was a man of faith and a scientist. Since his move in 2006 to La Storta in Pickering, Ontario he had been devoted to a ministry of pastoral prayer. He will be sadly missed by his Jesuit colleagues, his students, his family, and friends. Friends are invited to a wake on Monday, November 25th, 2013 from 7-9 p.m. at St. Ignatius Chapel, Manresa Spiritual Renewal Centre, Liverpool Road North, Pickering, ON. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Ignatius Chapel, Manresa Spiritual Renewal Centre, on Tuesday, November 26th at 11 a.m. Interment at the Jesuit Cemetery, Guelph at 2:30 p.m. In memory of Father Jim Murphy, donations may be made to the Jesuit Development Office, 43 Queen’s Park Crescent East, Toronto, ON M5S 2C3.
