Eulogy in English and Italian

Giuseppe Leo – Our Hero  

On behalf of my family, I would like to tell you briefly about the life of my father.  

Giuseppe Leo, my father, was born to Calogera Spinello and Domenico Leo, in Cattolica Eraclea, Sicily on November 27th, 1919.  He was the third-born of seven children.   In his 95 years on earth, Giuseppe was not only a husband to Giovanna Sciortino for 72 years, but a father of 3 daughters, a grandfather of 6, a great-grandfather of 4 and an uncle of about 100 if not more.  

Throughout his life, Giuseppe was an honourable and heroic gentleman. At the early age of 10, he lost his mother and became responsible for helping to raise his brothers, serving as a positive role model for them. As a young man, Giuseppe had to sacrifice his opportunity for education in order to help his father farm. 

In World War II, Giuseppe fought for his country, dodged bullets and even had a bomb fall at his feet.  Luckily, the bomb did not go off.  After being taken prisoner, he managed to quickly escape.  He would never forget the sufferings that he saw caused by human brutality.  Giuseppe's only goal was to survive in order to return home to his family. After the war ended, he returned to Northern Italy and decided to walk all the way back home to Sicily, a 40-day exhausting journey that he never forgot.  

After his war experiences and having walked back to Sicily, Giuseppe was not interested in any other travels.  Our poor mom had a hard time convincing him to immigrate to Canada in order to give their children a better life.  He struggled for the longest time, not wanting to leave the homeland that he had fought so hard to protect.   But his love for our mother, Giovanna, and for his children won in the end.  We left Italy for Canada in November 1965, and we were sailing at sea in the harsh cold of the Atlantic Ocean for two weeks.  

When Giuseppe's brothers told him how working construction in America made them a good living, much better than they could have had in Italy, he was doubtful.   He quickly learned that if he was willing to work hard, he could earn more money than he ever could hope to in Sicily.  Giuseppe became convinced that working in construction would help feed and clothe his family.  Although Dad could barely speak and understand English, the language barrier did not get in his way. Giuseppe was not afraid of hard work and sacrifice, if it meant a better future for the family. 

As the father of three daughters, Lilla, Mary and Josie, our Dad was there to walk each of us to the altar on our wedding day.  In return, we gave him what he wanted most, grandchildren and even some great grand-children.  Those were his happiest moments surrounded by the children.  His passions were gardening, cooking for the family, going up to the cottage, and spending time with the children.  His love encircled all of us. 

My father, Giuseppe Leo showed us what true courage and dignity meant in the last few weeks of his life.  Although we could do little to help him on his final journey of pain, he knew that the pain he had to endure would come to an end and all would pass.   He knew through suffering that he was on the journey back to God, his father and his true homeland, heaven. 
 

Daddy, enjoy your eternal home with all your loved ones, your 6 brothers and your parents.   Rest in peace, for God knows, you truly have earned it.

Giuseppe Leo – Il  Nostro Eroe

Della parte di mia famiglia, vorrei raccontarvi brevemente la vita di mio padre.

Giuseppe Leo, mio padre, è nato figlio di Calogera Spinello e Domenico Leo, a Cattolica Eraclea, in Sicilia il 27 novembre 1919. Era il terzo nato di sette figli. Per 95 anni sulla terra, Giuseppe non era solo un marito di Giovanna Sciortino per 72 anni, ma un padre di 3 figlie, un nonno di 6, un bisnonno di 4 e uno zio di circa 100 nipoti se non di più. 


Nel corso della sua vita, Giuseppe era un valoroso signore e eroico. Alla tenera età di 10, ha perso la madre e divenne responsabile per aiutare a crescere i suoi fratelli, che serviva come un modello positivo per loro.  Da giovane, Giuseppe ha dovuto sacrificare la sua opportunità di studiare per aiutare a suo padre a zappare in campagna.

Nella seconda guerra mondiale, Giuseppe ha combattuto per il suo paese, dove ha scanzato le pallottole e aveva anche una bomba che ha caduto ai suoi piedi e ha stato fortunato che la bomba no ha schopiatto. Dopo essere preso prigioniero, riuscì a fuggire in fretta. Papa, non aveva mai dimenticato le sofferenze che egli vedeva causato dalla brutalità umana nella guerra.  L'unico obiettivo di Giuseppe era di sopravvivere la guerra e di ritornare a casa della sua famiglia.  Al fine della guerra, papa  come soldato si trovava al Nord d'italia  e ha deciso di camminare e farsi un lungo viaggio estenuante a piede per 40 giorni per le strade finche arrivava in Sicilia al suo paese in casa della sua familia.  Con molto fatiga e corragio ha arrivato alla sua destinazione, pero no si ha mai dimenticato le sue esperienze di guerra .

Dopo quest'esperienze di guerra e viaggiando per arrivare  in Sicilia, Giuseppe non era interessato piu di fare altri viaggi in sua vita.  La nostra povera mamma ha avuto molto difficolta convincerlo ad emigrare in Canada per dare ai loro figli una vita migliore.   Papa ha lottato per lungo tempo, non volendo lasciare la su patria che aveva combattuto così duramente per proteggere. Ma il suo amore per la nostra madre, Giovanna, e per i suoi figli ha vinto alla fine.  Abbiamo lasciato l'Italia per il Canada nel novembre del 1965.  Abbiamo navigato in mare nel freddo dell'Oceano Atlantico per due settimane.

Quando i fratelli di Giuseppe lo hanno raccontato che lavarando in costruzione in America gli hanno dato una buona vita, meglio di quello che avrebbero potuto avere in Italia,  lui era dubbioso. Pero, in Canada ha imparato rapidamente che se fosse stato disposto a lavorare forte e ogni giorno, avrebbe potere guadagnare di più di quanto avesse mai potuto guadagnare in Sicilia.  Giuseppe si convinse che lavorando nella costruzione aiuterebbe nutrire e vestire la sua famiglia.  

Papà non riusciva a parlare e capire bene l'inglese.  Communque, lo stesso, Giuseppe non aveva paura di lavorare e sacrificare per un futuro migliore per la famiglia.

Come padre di tre figlie, Lilla, Maria e io Josie, lui a riuscito ad accompagnarci ognuno di noi all'altare il giorno del nostro matrimonio.  In cambio, gli abbiamo dato quello che voleva lui da noi, i nipoti e anche alcuni grandi nipoti.   Quelli momenti più felici in sua vita eravano quelli circondati dai bambini.  Le sue passioni sono il giardinaggio, cucinare per la famiglia, andare al cottage e passando il tempo con i suoi nipotini.   Il suo amore circondava a  tutti noi. 


Mio padre, Giuseppe Leo ci ha mostrato cosa sia il vero coraggio e dignità nelle ultime settimane della sua vita.   Anche se si abbiamo fatto ben poco per aiutarlo nel suo ultimo viaggio di dolore, sapeva lui che il dolore che ha dovuto sopportare sarebbe tutto passato.   Sapeva attraverso la sofferenza che il suo viaggio di dolore queste pochi settimane sarebbero il suo ultimo viaggio e alla casa di nostro padre, il Signore e alla sua vera patria, in cielo.
 

Papà, godati la casa eterna con tutti i tuoi cari: i tuoi 6 fratelli, ai tuoi genitori  e  ai suoceri che sono i nostri cari nonni.   Riposa in pace, perché Dio sa, che veramente l'ho hai guadagnato.

Caro padre, sei sempre nel nostro cuore.  Vi ringraziamo per il dono d'averte avuto in questa terra per 95 grandiosi anni.  Sei stato un ispirazione per tutti noi. I tuoi nipoti non si dimenticaranno tutto che hai fatto per loro.  Ti mancaranno molto e  ti pensano ogni giorno.  Grazie per tutto che ci hai insegnato.  Sei un genio per noi. 

Te vogliamo tanto bene per tutta la nostra vita.   A Dio carissimo padre. Riposa in pace.
