Retired Toronto Teacher
Don died suddenly, although not unexpectedly, on Feb. 19, 2016 at St. Michael's Hospital, aged 74.
Held to the end in the arms of his beloved and adoring wife Kathryn Quan.
Mourned by his sister Eleanor, sisters-in-law Barbara (Cam) and April (David), niece Lynn (Wayne) and their daughters Lori and Erika, and nephews Brad, Doug, Luke, and Christopher.
In his 36 years of teaching in downtown Toronto, Don was at Whitney, Duke of York, Blake, Gledhill, Winchester, Maurice Cody, Orde and King Edward Public Schools. He absolutely loved teaching "the turkeys" as much as they seemed to love being in his classes.
His irrepressible sense of humour showed up in "Headbanger Productions", which brought children's theatre to new heights (or perhaps lows). As "The Maestro", he supplied his own recorders, ukeleles and trumpets, teaching inner city children to make music. He himself, was active in the Toronto folk scene for years.
He was a great athlete. Although his own professional baseball career was aborted, he loved coaching kids' sports and was an active member of the downtown Central Y for decades. He was a terror on the racquetball court.
He loved Algonquin Park for camping, canoeing, moose-watching, wolf listening, and chipmunk taming
Declining health and mobility put him into a wheelchair and brought a quieter lifestyle, but he continued to declare himself "the happiest man I know."
