After a five month long struggle with pancreatic cancer, David passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday morning, holding hands with Jannie. He will be missed by his children Claire-Jehanne, Duncan, Andrew, Mark, Jacqueline, Matthew and David Jr.
After 50 years in the contracting business, his life's fine work lives on in the countless homes which his firm, Weenen General Contracting took under their wing to renovate.
David was a proud resident of Cabbagetown since the early 70's and was the founding force behind the Cabbagetown Mini Marathon which he organized for 17 years raising considerable funds for local charities. He chaired the local BIA and Jannie and David's home was often a popular feature on the annual Cabbagetown Tour of Homes.
The family cottage in Haliburton was a retreat in both summer and winter and the tiny ski hill there produced a love of skiing for most of the family (Jannie and Jackie have yet to be convinced). For the past 12 years David has sponsored the Ski Programme at the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre and joined the group at Blue Mountain whenever possible to help teach the kids a new and sometimes scary skill. Their self esteem was much improved after finding themselves at the bottom of the hill unscathed and exhilarated from the run.
We could not have managed his care at home without the dedicated Palliative Team of Dr. Leah Steinberg, Dr. Marnie Howe, and nurse Zaid. Thank you all so very much, we are so grateful for the care you gave us all.
Funeral to be held at 11:00 on Friday, December 23rd at Rosedale United Church, 159 Roxborough Drive, Toronto. A reception will follow in the church hall. If desired, donations may be made to The David Weenen Memorial Ski Fund, care of the Hincks-Dellcrest Foundation, 440 Jarvis Street, Toronto, M4Y 2H4 or the charity of your choice.
