On the morning of July 21, 2012, Darlene left us as she lived - dancing to the beat of her own drummer with courage, humour and determination. She was 56 years old.
Darlene was a dynamo, small in stature with immense spirit and strength. Darlene met her diagnosis, treatment and progress of terminal brain cancer with bravery, grace and wry wit.
She reached out to her family and friends, including them in her journey while always assuring them “Life Is Good!” Rarely have we witnessed such strength and kindness in the face of a devastating illness, she was our hero.
She left the love of her life - her husband Dave and her border collie Angus, her three sisters Tricia, Shirley and Jem Cain, and her brother-in-laws Gus Calderone and Russell Phillips. She was the first-born niece to Tony and Jackie, Gerald and Merelyn, and Mary and Jimmy Odrowski. She also left her Sprigg family in-laws Linda and Chris Malcolm, Jean Boniface, Bruce and Ann Sprigg, Paula Sprigg, Barbara Mills and Phil Pitney, Billy and Deanna Sprigg. Darlene left a host of cousins, extended family and cherished friends.
Darlene worked in the airline industry which she loved for 34 years, at Hudson-General, Canadian Airlines, and Air Canada. Two of Darlene’s goals were to see her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary with Dave on July 1st, and to be awarded her Air Canada 25 year service pin, she reached both those goals.
Darlene was at Bethell Hospice for the last three months of her life. Her focus was not her illness, but fundraising for Bethell. Darlene encouraged family and friends to support the hospice to ensure other people and their families received the gentle, kind care that we have. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Bethell Hospice:
Of her life Darlene said, “I attribute this incredible good karma to the people who touched my life, whose words of advice and wisdom stayed with me and guided my choices all through my time. My choice of friends, career and outside interests all shaped me into the being I was.”
Darlene changed the lives of the people she met, we are richer for having known her, and the world is a poorer place with her passing.
Always remember, Life Is Good!
