Marion Matthias and the VWA

On the passing of Marion Matthias, we at the VWA (Victoria Women’s Association) send our sympathy to her relatives and her other friends.

A graduate of Victoria College, Marion was a faithful Executive member of the VWA, a 124-year-old Association that welcomes the public and serves Vic by hosting lecturers during the academic year and raising money for Vic students in need. She was its vice president for the last twenty years, and, taking her responsibilities seriously, she would insist on driving down from Thornhill to Vic even in questionable wintery weather. A few years ago, Marion received the Ontario Volunteer Service Award from the provincial government in celebration of  her contribution to the Association. VWA members can remember the fun they had when Marion was the enthusiastic organizer of a fashion show that highlighted apparel from earlier times; the proceeds enriched the VWA Bursary Fund. 

We realized that under Marion’s feisty exterior beat a kind and loyal heart. Marion, we miss you. Rest in peace and happiness!



Marian and I shared our early childhood on Wellington St in Chatham. They were good times  - games in the front yard, the giant swing in the back, toffee apples at Halloween, the basement filled with quantities of toys - so many days and years  of fun.  We also shared the fact that we were both librarians, I at U of T.

It was with profound sadness we learned of Marion's death.  I met Marion at Library School & we remained friends ever since.  We now live in Tsawwassen, B.C. but we would always visit Marion whenever we were back East as we still have a cottage in Haliburton.  It was an annual event to call on each other's birthday to catch up & when we called this past year on October 31st we had to leave a message, but never heard back.  She also called Peter every year on his birthday, November 2nd & shared experiences, but this year there wasn't a phone call.  She was a very special person, so proud of her family & their achievements - we will miss her very much.    Fondly, Cheryl & Peter McTait.

Marion was a special friend  ever since we were introduced on our first day of Grade nine.  Our lives seemed to run parallel with graduations, marriage, children, living abroad-me in Britain, Marion, Chuck & family in Russia & then back to Canada to our roots.  Marion never forgot a birthday & made a point of gathering old friends together to celebrate.  I always admired her passion for her interests & especially her family.

      Marion will be missed. She was a well known all around Thornhill, it was not unusual to see her at Whimpy’s and Timmie’s. She always asked my husband and myself about our children (by name) although it had been over twenty years since she had seen them. 
       The world is a sadder place without this special person in it.

Marion was our neighbour and we used to have fascinating conversations over the fence: she on Colborne St. and me on John Street. 
Together we watched our children grow up and go out into the world. She was a courageous woman who wanted to make the world a better place. Rest in peace Marion.


We are sharing your sorrow, Brendan,  Christopher Michael, and all of yours and the Shepley family.   We have felt part of that family for many, many years and will always remember sharing events and time at Fox Lake with Marion.  We always wished that we could air-condition the lake for her!
