Dr. Robert H. Salvesen, 88, of Jackson, formerly of Lakewood, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 30, 2012, at Bella Terra, Jackson, NJ. Born in Staten Island, NY, he resided in Clark and Little Silver, NJ before retiring to Lakewood and then Jackson. Robert received his PhD in Organic Chemistry and was a research chemist with Exxon Research and Engineering for 23 years where he authored numerous patents. After his retirement, he founded Robert H. Salvesen Environmental Consultants, a world-wide environmental consulting firm. Robert was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Toms River and the Oceanaires Barbershop Chorus, Toms River, NJ. He grew up and was involved with churches his entire life serving as an elder, Sunday school superintendent and teacher and member of the choir. Robert was a WW II veteran serving in the European Theatre, with the Army's 94th Infantry Division and was a member of the Bayville VFW Post 9503. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club and was President of the Board of Education both in Clark. Robert also coached Little League and Pop Warner Football and loved traveling and photography.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Alice (nee Knutson) of 64 years; son, Robert A. of Bridgewater, NJ and daughters, Diane Bell and her husband Bill, of Scotch Plains, NJ and Susan Salvesen and her partner Art Urbin of San Jose, CA. He is also survived by his twin brother, Clifford Salvesen of Kutztown, PA; three grandsons, Brian, David and his wife Erica, and Jeffrey Bell; his granddaughter, Marlayna Salvesen and over 20 loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Kenneth and Ralph, and his sister, Ruth.
A memorial service will be held August 18, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Toms River, 1070 Hooper Ave., Toms River, NJ. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Presbyterian Church, Toms River designated for the Rejoice in Hope campaign.
