Shortly after high school, Ray joined the Air Force and worked as an electrician. Not at wartime, he played baseball for the Air Force all over Europe. Upon his discharge, he was recruited by the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He was an active member of St. Mary’s in Linden and coached not only his sons, Ray & Jimmy, but many young boys for years.
Ray spent over 50 years as a referee for boys basketball and umpire for girls high school basketball. He was a legend to coaches, players, high school athletic directors and his peers. In 2003, he was inducted into the Union County Baseball Hall of Fame and in 2007 he was inducted into the Amateur Softball Association of Union County Hall of Fame.
He worked as Vice President of Operations at Continental-Bournique Ltd. He was employed by Wilson Jones as Plant Manager. He has spent the last 20 years working for Children’s Specialized Hospital.
An avid golfer, nothing he enjoyed more than golfing with family and long time friends. His claim to fame
“ hole in one “ in November 2013.
Ray was pre-deceased by his son Jimmy, his parents and grandparents.
Ray is survived by his loving wife Maureen (Cummiskey), his children Ray (Louise), Cindy McCain (Charles),
Joan Ortel and Tracy Semrow (Corey); granddaughters Mary, Ashley, Brooke, Maddie, Cassidy, Avery and his sister, Mary Connell.
Ray will be honored and remembered Thursday September 19,2024 at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday September 20,2024 at 9:45am at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lakehurst, NJ. Burial will be immediately following mass at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ at 11:00am.
