Jack, as he preferred to be called, was born in Teaneck, NJ on May 13, 1935, and grew up in Bergen County. He graduated from Ridgefield Park High School in 1955 and enlisted in the Air Force, training as a crypto operator and serving in North Africa and Fort Mead near Washington, DC. He was honorably discharged in 1958 and was hired by Roadway Trucking as a middle manager. While working there, he attended Fairleigh Dickenson University's night school, graduating with a degree in Business Management.
Jack was transferred to Columbia, South Carolina where he met Marydell Trainer at work. He was transferred back to New Jersey & on November 14, 1964 married MaryDell. Jack then took a job at Mercedes where he worked at the US headquarters in Montvale, NJ. until his retirement in 1999.
One of Jack's loves was singing. He had a great baritone voice and was a member of the St. Anthony's choir in Hawthorne, as well as a member of the Dapper Dans of Harmony, a championship barbershop chorus.
He enjoyed sports, especially with his son, John, who was an outstanding high school football player.
Jack moved to Holiday City in 2002 and greatly enjoyed starring in a number of musicals put on by the Holiday City Players. For many years while living in Toms River he sang as choir master at St. Maximillian Church.
He was known as an extraordinary good neighbor, helping many of those who lived around him. Jack was always seen with a smile and a cheerful greeting.
Jack was predeceased by his wife, MaryDell; and his son John. He is survived by his brother, William May and sister, Frances (May) Kilgallen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10am at St. John's Catholic Church, located at 619 Chestnut St, Lakehurst, NJ 08733, with burial to follow at 11:30am at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery located at 350 Province Line Rd, Wrightstown, NJ 08562.
There will be a memorial mass for Jack & Mary Dell in their beloved St Anthony's church in Hawthorne, in the near future.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Horizon Funeral & Cremation Services, 1329 Route 37 W, Toms River, NJ.
