Joan Evelyn Carlson, 87, of Lakewood, NJ, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2018, at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, and attended Bay Ridge High School. She lived in Lake Hiawatha, NJ, Barnegat, NJ, and Holiday City in Toms River, NJ, before moving to Harrogate in 2013. Joan had many jobs over the years, but her roles as Mom and Grandma gave her the greatest joy. She was always ready to babysit, either for short or long stints. Joan’s hobbies included painting, crocheting, playing cards, reading, and going to the beach. She sang in the choir at Harrogate and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Toms River. Her Norwegian heritage was very important to her, and she was a member of the Sons of Norway her entire life. She was a kind and humble person, always ready to lend a hand including serving on the Rockaway Neck Volunteer Ambulance Squad for many years. She was also a Girl Scout leader and particularly enjoyed camping with the girls. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Joan was predeceased by her parents Reidar and Genevieve Stenberg, her beloved husband George Carlson, and her grandson George Daly. She is survived by her son Ken Carlson and wife Lyn of Boonton Township, NJ; and her three daughters: Dr. Lynn Carlson and husband Thomas McNally of Wakefield, NH, Nancy Daly and husband Dave of Whitehouse Station and Lavallette, NJ, and Karen Law and husband Russell of Hamburg, NJ. Joan is also survived by her sister Barbara Rademaker of NC; and five grandchildren: Alex Law, Genevieve Daly, Kathryn McNally and her spouse Rebecca McNally, William Carlson, and Owen Law.
Visitation will be Friday, August 17th, from 7 to 9 PM, at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main Street, Toms River, NJ 08753. The Funeral Service will be 11 AM Saturday, August 18th, at the First United Methodist Church, 129 Chestnut Street, Toms River, NJ 08753. Cremation will be private.
