Joan Marie Carey, a beloved member of the Holiday City South community, previously of Roselle, New Jersey, passed away on Monday, July 3, 2023, at the age of 90, after a brief illness. She was born on January 13, 1933, in New York, New York, to the late Michael and Alice Clarke.
After high school, Joan worked for United Airlines, allowing her to travel the country by air. After marrying her husband, Bill, she was a medical billing representative for St. Elizabeth Hospital until her retirement. Proud of her Irish heritage and devoted to her Catholic faith, Joan volunteered her time as a CCD instructor (15 years), BINGO coordinator, and Roselle Catholic Mother’s Club officer. Joan enjoyed going to church, gathering with family and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her loving husband William F. Carey of 50 years; she is survived by her three children William (Donna), Colleen Carey Dabrio, and David (Kellyann); her eight grandchildren Erica Brown (Joe) , Ashley Klein (Christian), Nicholas Dabrio, Victoria Carey, Abigail Carey (Conor), Caroline Carey, Julia Carey and Emily Carey; and her three great-grandchildren Anthony Brown, Joey Brown and Gemma Klein.
A visitation to honor and celebrate Joan’s life will be held on Sunday, July 9, 2023, from 2-6 pm at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 26 Mule Road, Toms River, New Jersey 08755.
A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday July 10, 2023, at 10:00 am at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, where Joan found strength and inspiration. Following the mass, she will be laid to rest at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org/donate) in memory of Joan Carey. She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her, but her spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of those whose lives she touched.
