Elizabeth A. McGuire, 76, of Lakewood, passed away, Sunday July 4, 2010 at Van Dyke Hospice of Community Medical Center, Toms River. She was born to the late Joseph and Mary Butler on September 3, 1933 in Jersey City, NJ, the 9th of 13 children. She married the late Frank McGuire and moved to southeastern Connecticut, where they raised a family and lived for many years. She returned to her native New Jersey in 1999. Elizabeth, or "Betty" to those closest to her, worked as a bookkeeper or clerk for various companies over the years, most recently the Electric Boat division of the defense contractor General Dynamics. A devout Catholic, she was a woman of great faith who particularly loved her current parish, St. Mary's of the Lake. Throughout her life she enjoyed varied interests including bowling, playing cards, bingo, trips to Atlantic City, afternoon soap operas and vintage rock 'n roll music. She loved dogs, making room at various times in her life for several much-beloved and well-fed companions. A voracious reader, she consumed multiple newspapers each day, and novels by the dozen, and in the process instilled an enduring love of reading in her children.
Elizabeth is survived by a son, Frank McGuire Jr., of Kensington, MD; and a daughter, Sharon McGuire of Marietta, GA. She is also survived by her sisters, Joan Butler of Lakewood, NJ, Mildred Labruno of Hoboken, NJ, Constance Jacquemot of Toms River, NJ; and her brother, Vincent Butler of Fairlawn, NJ.
A viewing will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 PM, and again from 7:00 - 9:00 PM, on Friday July 9, 2010 at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St. Toms River.
