Our dearest mother, Caroline died peacefully at 93 surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her devoted children Peter Jr, (Tricia) Don, Gail Maria, cherished grandchildren Jaclyn and Brandon. Also, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Caroline is predeceased by her beloved husband Peter of 67 years, parents Melvin and Margaret (Daum) Black, brothers Robert E. Black, Melvin G.W. Black, and sisters Elaine Fearen, Mary Louise Breheny.
Caroline was born in Brooklyn, NY and a proud graduate of Dickerson High School, Jersey City, NJ. She attended Rugters University and Bloomfield College Presbyterian School of Nursing, Class of 1952 as a Registered Nurse. Her chosen specialty was the Operating Room. Additionally, she worked Private Duty for 30 years in Riverview Hospital, Red Bank, NJ. Caroline was also a former Democratic Committeewoman and Social Director to the Raritan Ridge Civic Committee in Hazlet, NJ.
Caroline was honored with a Certificate of Recognition for her dedication, enthusiasm, and loyal participation in The Nurses’ Health Study Twenty-Year Anniversary (1976-1996) on behalf of the Channing Laboratory at Harvard Medical School.
Caroline met the love of her life Peter while in Nursing School and after their beautiful courtship was married in the Spring of 1954. For the next 67 years they shared a wonderful and happy life together until Peter’s passing in 2021 at the age of 97. Together they had 3 loving children Peter Jr. Don and Gail Maria.
Caroline enjoyed extensive traveling throughout the continental U.S., Hawaii, Canada and Italy. She loved writing letters, cooking, baking her famous Christmas cookies, international breads and pastries, hosting dinner parties for family, friends and her classmates of the Presbyterian Nursing School.
The most precious gift to all who knew Caroline was her warm smile, thoughtfulness, generosity, and willingness to offer a helping hand. She will be loved and deeply missed everyday but remain forever in our hearts.
A memorial service for Caroline will be held Saturday, December 14, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Horizon Funeral & Cremation Services, 1329 Route 37 West, Toms River, NJ 08755.
