August L. Hermanni, Jr., 93, of Beachwood, passed away on Sat. Feb. 22 at Community Medical Center. Born in Paterson, he’s been a resident of Beachwood since 1950. He was a veteran of the US Coast Guard having served in WW II. Gus had a childhood dream of becoming a fireman and was a member of the Beachwood Fire Dept. in the early 1950’s until his appointment as Fire Chief at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in 1958. He was the recipient of numerous awards and worked there until his retirement in 1976. He also worked as a training Officer for the Toms River Fire Dept. #2. Gus was a member of the Navy Lakehurst Historical Society and the American Legion. He loved gardening, woodworking and model railroading.
Gus was predeceased by his wife, Anne, his daughter-in-law Dorothy and his brother Harold. He is survived by two sons; Robert L. and Donna Hermanni of Whiting and August L. Hermanni, III of Beachwood, a daughter Carol A. Bautiste and Robert of Cresco, PA; a sister-in-law Edith Bosschoart of NM. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service to be held at the chapel at the Brig. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Thursday Feb. 27th at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s own choice. Arrangements are being handled by Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Toms River.
