William Jacobs Rettberg was born in Baltimore Maryland on August 31st, 1926, and passed away quietly on January 23, 2021. Beloved husband of the late Shirley McDermott Rettberg, and survived by son, William Thomas Rettberg and his wife Robin L Sommer, and daughter Karen Rettberg King and her husband Chip King, He is also survived by five grandchildren; Sky King, Jordan King, Livvy Hill, Jeff Rettberg, and Blair King, and five great grandchildren.
Mr. Rettberg served in the South Pacific in World War 2 as a US Navy Seabee. After the war, he first worked as a welder, and as a photographer for various established studios in the Baltimore area.
In 1948, along with his brother, the late James L Rettberg Jr., he formed Rettberg Brothers Photography, and opened a studio in the Govans section of the city.
The partnership dissolved in 1978, and Bill Rettberg carried on under the name Bill Rettberg Photography Inc. until 2014. Photographing his last wedding at 87 years of age!
During his career, Rettberg personally photographed over 3,000 weddings, and Bill Rettberg Photography Inc.was during the 1980s, the largest wedding photography studio in the state of Maryland.
There will be a private memorial service for the immediate family at a date later this year.
