On March 21, 2014 MARY J. BARNES (nee Byan). The former Mary J. Byan was born in Baltimore City on October 7, 1918 and raised in Locust Point. She has been a life long resident of the Baltimore area. Mary graduated from Southern High School at the age of 15. After working as a secretary at her neighborhood elementary school and other jobs, she passed the Baltimore City Civil Servant Exam and began her successful career in Baltimore City working her way up to become the secretary to Charles Benton, the Director of Finance. While working for Mr. Benton she was voted “Most Valuable Secretary” and met the then President of the City Council, Tommy D’Alesandro, III, who asked her to be his personal secretary when he was elected Mayor of Baltimore City. She worked for him during his term of office (1967-1971) and then worked as Supervisor of the Dept. of Disbursements from which she retired.
During her retirement she was proud to donate her time working for the Towson Assistance Center. She loved playing games, especially Scrabble and Yahtzee.
She was the loving wife of the late William W. Barnes and beloved mother of William M. Barnes and his wife Shelly and Stephanie Martin; loving grandmother of Anna Locke, Steven Barnes, Mary Elder and Christopher & David Martin; cherished great-grandmother of Whit, Riley & Daniella Martin, Hannah Elder and Blair Locke.
The family will receive friends in the LEMMON FUNERAL HOME OF DULANEY VALLEY INC., 10 W. Padonia Road (at York Road) Timonium, MD 21093 on Monday, March 24, 10-11am at which time services will be celebrated. Interment Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be directed in Mary’s memory to the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, 750 East Pratt St., Suite 1700, Baltimore, MD 21202.
