Evelyn M. Elgert, 95, (nee Shock) of Timonium; peacefully passed away on July 1, 2019, beloved wife of the late John E. "Jack" Elgert, Jr.; loving and proud mother of John A. and his wife Julia and Barclay J. Elgert and the late Linda M. Schurr and her late husband Dale; devoted sister of the late John B. Shock, Jr.; cherished grandmother of Jennifer, David, Lori, J.B. and Carrie; loving great-grandmother of Ryan, Ethan, Jackson, William, Elizabeth, and Leo.
Evelyn was born in Lutherville, Maryland on March 9, 1924, the daughter of Luella and John Barclay Shock, Sr. She is on the cradle roll at St. Johns Methodist Church in Lutherville. Evelyn attended Lutherville Elementary School, (now the gray apartment building across from the Lutherville Firehouse), Towson High School, and attended Towson State. After attending Bard Avon Business School in Baltimore City, she worked for the Supervisor of Maintenance for Baltimore County Schools. During World War II she worked in the purchasing department at Bendix Radio.
Jack and Evelyn married July 26, 1945 when he returned from the war in Germany, and moved into the "brand" new Loch Bend Apartments on Loch Raven Blvd. In 1948 and expecting their first child, Jack and Evelyn put a $10 deposit on a house on Oakway Road. They made this their home, raised their three children, and lived her entire life on Oakway Road.
A few years after they bought their house, Evelyn transferred from St. Johns Methodist Church to Timonium United Methodist Church. Evelyn was very active at Timonium Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, Bible School and devoted her time and service.
When her youngest child, Barclay, entered first grade in 1966, Evelyn returned to work in the Assessment Office of Baltimore County. In 1989, she retired after 23 years of service. Evelyn enjoyed many years of retirement with Jack, her family and friends.
The family will receive friends in the LEMMON FUNERAL HOME OF DULANEY VALLEY INC., 10 W. Padonia Road (at York Road) Timonium, MD 21093 on Monday, July 8, 2019 from 2 to 4 PM & 7 to 9 PM. A Funeral Service will be celebrated in Timonium United Methodist Church, 2300 Pot Spring Road, Timonium, MD 21093 on Tuesday, July 9 at 11 AM. Interment Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
